I’m teaching English again this fall, but I’m not sure which class I’ll be teaching yet. It will either be English 101 or English 102. These are both freshman writing classes. In the 101 class, students read essays and then craft their own in response to them or on other topics but using them as a model. In the 102 class, students write essays in response to works of literature. Both focus on argument, research, and writing with sources. I’ve taught both several times. I’m fairly happy with my English 102 syllabus, but I’ve never been very happy with the readings for English 101, so I posted a question over at ask.metafilter.com and the answers have been pretty good. If you have any favorite essays you think would be good for a freshman writing class, jump over to the thread or just post them here in the comments. I’ll read my way through the suggestions and use them to revamp my fall syllabus.
