Being a bookish sort, I’ve never had any patience for censors, especially self-appointed ones. So, while she was never in danger of getting my vote, the recent news that Sarah Palin falls into that ignoble category is one more reason to dislike her and, in my book, one more reason she fails in the basic requirements of leadership. (Hat tip: Jack.)
I don’t have plans to vote for Palin, but I don’t see much difference in this behavior and the left’s promotion of the “Fairness Doctrine”. Censorship is censorship, and the left would be arguing IN favor of the First Amendment if they were the ones dominating talk-radio radio.
Of course, the left now claims they ARE defending free speech, but if roles were reversed, the left would say the FD is an attack on free speech, and the right would say it’s a defense of it.
Censorship is censorship is censorship. And state control of information is just plain scary to me.
By the way, your site looks good in Chrome.
The FCC abolished the fairness doctrine in 1987. I know some on the Left (and, probably, on the far Right, as well) would like to bring it back. It is probably, as you rightly point out, unconstitutional. I certainly don’t want to be governmentally required to provide equal space for right-wing views here on Wheatblog.
But I’m not talking about “the Left” or “the Right” in general. I’m making a specific comment about a specific politician on a specific issue in which she is, as you and I both agree, blatantly in the wrong.
I didn’t vote for Gore, even though I liked a lot of things about him, in part because he was married to Tipper, and I just couldn’t bring myself to vote in a first lady who made her reputation censoring the music of my youth in the name of “protecting the children.”
I’m squarely on the Left and don’t support censorship of any sort. I don’t know of any friends on the Left who do.
Ah, I haven’t checked it out in Chrome yet. I’ll have to do that. Thanks!
Just checked it in Chrome and it’s not bad. But I’ve gotten entirely spoiled by the font rendering in Safari. I wonder how long it will take Google to push out a version of Chrome for OS X? I like the concept. I really need to test it with some AJAX-intensive web apps, as that’s what it’s really designed for.
I understand your point is not a left-right comment. Fair enough.
Tipper messed with Dee Snyder. And you’re not gonna take it.
“I don’t know of any friends on the Left who do.”
That’s good and interesting news, but I don’t trust the ones who control the issue. Every time I see a Dem politician on tv addressing the FD, they’re in favor of it (see Hillary, Durbin, Feinstien, Boxer). I suspect whether liberal voters want it or not, the Democrats in positions of power would revive it.
That’s right, man. Nobody messes with Dee. Leaves my hair metal alone, Tipper!
