Last night, the master boot record of my Windows 2000 install became corrupted. Of course, the OS didn’t have the good sense to tell me this. I had to figure it out by myself. But repairing it was easy enough. You just boot from with Win2K CD, launch the “recovery console” [just a DOS prompt, really] and run fixmbr.exe. I guess I got lucky, as that’s all it took to make my drive bootable again. So the new rule is this: backups to CD every Sunday and more often if I’m working on something critical. I’d been a bad boy this time. I’d have lost two months worth of work if I hadn’t been able to boot back up.
I’ve decided to wait until the end of this month to switch from blogger to b2. That way, I won’t have to mess with a partial month archive. So, wish me luck. And if you don’t hear from me soon after March 1st, you’ll now I either got busy with my “real” life or I screwed something up.
If I were starting a new blog from scratch, I might try texttpatern. I downloaded it and played around a bit, but I think b2 suits my needs better. But those were the two contenders. MT is also cool, but it’s done in Perl and I prefer something in PHP/MySQL so I can really hack on it if need be.
