Tribute: Jack Lawrence Martin

Friday, July 29th, 2005

Today makes two years since my father, Jack Lawerence Martin (November 7, 1917 — July 29, 2003) died. I scanned a few photos and uploaded them to flickr. I have a few more to find and scan. He was an odd old bird, but I miss him.

And the hits keep on coming…

Wednesday, July 27th, 2005

Josh told me I’d like The Life Aquatic, and I certainly did. Bill Murray keeps doing amazing stuff. Everyone in that film put in a great performance. To round out my Wes Anderson viewing, I’ve got Bottle Rocket on order.

Chick-fil-a story + more movie roundup…

Friday, July 22nd, 2005

I gave blood earlier this week, and one of the perks was a coupon for a free Chick-fil-A sandwich. I thought it was cool of them to support the blood drive and not give out something lame (like free order of fries or two-ounce smoothie or something). And I like Chick-fil-A (and fast [...]

Sorry I missed your birthday, wheatblog…

Monday, July 18th, 2005

Almost every year, I manage to miss the anniversary date of wheatblog. The first anniverssary passed without mention. I made brief mention of the second anniversay, belated mention of the third, and no mention–that I can find–of the fourth. Be that as it may, the recently past July 13th marks wheatblog’s fifth [...]

The Kafkaesque becomes commonplace

Friday, July 15th, 2005

Two news items of interest found their way onto my radar today: this report on the inquiry into Guantanamo Bay, and this circuit court ruling on the legality of military tribunals. I won’t sleep any better tonight because of these.

Movie roundup…

Friday, July 15th, 2005

I’ve been catching up on some 2004 flicks: Mean Creek, The Machinist, Vanity Fair, The Door in the Floor.
In terms of overall quality, I’d put them pretty much in that same order. All were good. Mean Creek and The Machinist were outstandingly good. Those two are heavy meditations on [...]

The last meme…

Tuesday, July 12th, 2005

Jack sent me this music meme, so I’ll play along:

1. Total volume of music files on my computer: 13GB
2. Last CD I bought: Green Day, American Idiot. And it effin rocks. It’s the best rock album I’ve heard in years.
3. Song Playing Right Now: “Angels” by Joe Henry. [...]

One more reason to use FireFox

Friday, July 8th, 2005

Everyone I know who uses FireFox also uses the web developer extension. That extension has many wonderful features. One I’ve just started using recently is the ability to hack CSS on the fly. This is really handy when you’re trying to read a lengthy online work that is formatted without any styling [...]

Friday Flash fun…

Friday, July 8th, 2005

I forgot to mention teagames.com, which I found a few days ago (can\’t remember the source). Funky Truck, BMX Backflips, and Crazy Golf 2 are not to be missed!

A new take on MIDI guitar

Friday, July 8th, 2005

In the 1980s, using guitars to create MIDI signals (so you can use them to play synthesizers and such) was a very popular idea. I dabbled in this a bit myself, though I rather quickly found it not to be my cup of tea. But what about taking it the other direction: [...]
