Happy birthday, Walt Whitman (1819-1892)

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

Garrison Keeler did a nice reading from “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” on his radio show this morning in honor of Walt Whitman’s birthday. You can read the full text of the poem (or one of several others) at RPO.

IKEA is coming…

Monday, May 30th, 2005

Atlanta, Georgia is getting an IKEA on June 29. Google Maps claims that’s seven hours from where I live, but I think it’s closer to six. That’s still a bit long for a Sunday drive, but it’s still workable on a long weekend.

Preaching to the choir

Thursday, May 26th, 2005

As part of (what I see as) the overall trend away from rationalism and clear thinking in America, “intelligent design” arguments are becoming more and more common. But repeating a sophism over and over doesn’t make it any more true. So here are a few critiques, should you need them: H. Allen Orr’s Devolution (warning: [...]

Yesterday, I discovered a bug in the way the combo box component works. I\’m posting this for the benefit of those who might be wasting their time searching for an answer, [...]

Annual birthday post

Wednesday, May 18th, 2005

Yeah, yeah, it’s my birthday. Thir-ty-five. I don’t have anything interesting to say about it, really. But there’s no denying it. Thanks to all the well-wishers and other do-gooders out there–you know who you are.
Scott sent me this link of fifty fun things to do with your iPod. Go read that instead. One they didn’t [...]

Beyond Red vs. Blue

Thursday, May 12th, 2005

The Pew Research Center has issues an interesting report about political beliefs (”typologies“) in the US. They also have a nice quiz (32 questions) you can take to see where you fall in their spectrum. You probably know where I landed.

Jumping on the meme train…

Friday, May 6th, 2005

I dont’ know where I saw this one, but the idea is to put each letter of the alphabet into your browser’s address bar and see what pops up for each. I work on two or three machines regularly, so I tried it with the one that’s handy. I empty my cache quite often and [...]
