“640K ought to be enough for anybody”

The title of today’s post derives from a famously bad prediction made by Bill Gates. I’ve been feeling the sting of Windows XP’s seemingly insatiable hunger for RAM recently. My wife and I both have Dell laptops. Her’s has 384MB of RAM and runs just fine. Mine shipped with 256MB, which was plenty for my previous laptop (a 400Mhz box running Windows 2000). And I fell into Bill’s trap of thinking that I had enough ram. I finally ordered an additional 256MB chip from crucial.com (great price, fast delivery). And I couldn’t be happier. Thanks to the added ram and some tweaking tips from blackviper.com, my box has undergone a magical transformation from a useless, sluggish, frustration factory I regretted buying to a very zippy and useful tool that I actually enjoy using.
