Here’s a great idea (Defending the Fox)

Tuesday, September 28th, 2004

If you get as sick as I do of browser detection scripts which redirect you to a page telling you to fix your browser just because you use something reasonable instead of Internet Explorer, then you should contribute to this project. The idea is simple, they maintain lists of sites which do the detection and [...]

mp3s down, should be back Monday

Sunday, September 26th, 2004

Mp3s on the Nancy archived site and those linked off the bandography are offline for the moment. They should be back up on Monday, but it might take a few days longer. They’re on a seperate server and it was taken down this weekend for maintenance but should be back up soon.

NWA, sampling, freedom, and you…

Sunday, September 26th, 2004

Read up on the recent court case against (long defunct) rap group NWA and their (IMHO, perfectly legit) use of a Funkadelic sample (and, if you’re musically inclined, send in your own mix).

life and television

Sunday, September 26th, 2004

” I suspect I have spent just about exactly as much time actually writing as the average person my age has spent watching television, and that, as much as anything, may be the real secret here.” — William Gibson

Open Source to the rescue, once again…

Tuesday, September 21st, 2004

I mentioned Caio Chassot’s wonderful FireFox extension MiniT recently. A friend of mine who uses OS X had some problems getting it to run, so I emailed Caio about the problem and the author sent a link to the new, OS X friendly XPI. Turnaround time on the fix? Less than three hours! That’s dedication.

Two reccomendations: Ben McAllister & George L

Tuesday, September 21st, 2004

One of the things I really love about blogging is getting email from the people I mention here. Back in 2002, I posted about an avant-garde musician, Ben McAllister, whose work I had found on the web. Ben emailed me last week to tell me has a site now called listenfaster.com and a new album [...]

del.icio.us

Monday, September 20th, 2004

Steve turned me onto del.icio.us and I haven’t been the same since. I’ve tried a lot of bookmarking tools, but this one is king. I’m actually looking forward to migrating all my bookmarks from my home machine to del.icio.us so I can access them wherever I am.

Three great FireFox extensions (for your pleasure)

Friday, September 17th, 2004

One of the coolest things about opensource software is other people can extend it. There are currently 100 extensions for FireFox. Here are three you should check out: FoxyTunes, MiniT, and Sage.
FoxyTunes lets you control your media play from within FireFox (which is suprisingly handy). It works with many players and you can set up [...]

Shakespeare in quarto

Thursday, September 16th, 2004

Heard a cool story on NPR yesterday (on the drive home) about the British Library making their collection of Shakespeare’s quartos (93 copies representing 21 plays) availible online. It’s an increadibly cool project and the viewer interface lets you compare two works side by side. I look forward to a day when all rare books [...]

New Firefox (1.0 Preview Release)

Thursday, September 16th, 2004

The first preview release of the 1.0 version of everyone’s favorite browser, Mozilla Firefox, was released this week. The Firefox folks have also put together a community site called spreadfirefox.com to help hype it. I just grabbed a copy and there are some tasty improvements. Get yourself a copy and browse happy.
