Gaston and me…

Tuesday, August 31st, 2004

We’re still out of power at my place, thanks to Gaston. And, in South Carolina, being without power means being without air conditioning, which is essential to life out here. But we’re getting by. And the power company promises to have us hooked up by the end of they day (we’ll see about that).

George Lakoff’s latest…

If you are a liberal, you will probably enjoy this from Berkeley’s famous linguistics professor. Here’s a tasty quote:
And the “war on terror,” of course, never ends. There’s no peace treaty with terror. It’s a prescription for keeping conservatives in power indefinitely. In three words “war on terror” they’ve enacted vast political changes

One of my wife’s classmates has a cool photography site that’s worth a look. I also noticed that my photographer/graphic designer friend, Benny has redesigned benzografx.com.

Paranoid fools vs Google

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

This rant on what Google knows about you is so stupid I hesitate to even link it. Let’s look at it line by line:
* Everything you search for using Google
Let’s see, you mean to tell me that if I put info in a form and press submit that the server will receive that information? You [...]

New freelance eating my lunch

Sunday, August 22nd, 2004

Okay, it’s not so bad, but I’m busy. Too busy to do much else but work. NYT obit (free registration required). Wikipedia has a list of his works and a brief bio. I found a few poems online (text and real audio). There are several others here (warning: pop-ups). I can’t remember which book of his I read long ago.

Back in town…

Tuesday, August 17th, 2004

Sorry for the lack of updates. I just got back from Fayetteville, Arkansas after a long trip to take care of some family business. I’ll give a full update and share some pictures when time permits.

Printing from Cygwin

Wednesday, August 4th, 2004

I use Cygwin quite a lot, but I never tried printing from it until last night. I had assumed it would be difficult; it’s not. On Unix/Linux systems, you can print by piping commands to lpr (i.e. “local printer”). So, for instance, printing the results of ls -a (list all files in the current directory) [...]

Bass-specific

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2004

First off, I just noticed that Ron Velosky’s excellent book, Sight Reading for the Bass now has its own web site. Ron, who sent me a review copy of this book years ago, died far too young. But he managed to write what I believe to be the best book on the subject. So, if [...]
