Java Installation Error 1722 (and a fix for it)

I was installing the Java 2 SDK (version 1.4.2) on a Windows XP box yesterday when I ran into the mysterious “Error 1722″ which is mentioned here in Sun’s installation notes. Unfortunately, their fix didn’t fix my problem. The solution? Make sure there aren’t any previous installs of Java on the box. I found four of them on this particular one. After uninstalling all of them (through the Windows control panel), I was able to do a clean install of Java and run jEdit (which was the whole point). I post this here for any other souls who might run into this problem while installing Java on Windows.
